Are You Worried About Your Skin Aging? Try Microneedling

Are you in search for non-invasive treatment options for reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, lax skin, and enlarged pores? Then learn about how microneedling treatment at Valeriya Life Medical Spa can improve your own collagen production, a building block for smoother and tighter skin.

Why collagen production is a target of microneedling ?

As we get older, our collagen production levels naturally decline by 1% annually, starting at the age of 25. Over lifetime, we also experience exposure to the sun that causes destruction of the skin’s collagen through a process called photoaging. Photoaging effects accumulate over time; it causes deep damage to the skin’s cells and DNA. Our skin starts producing some defective collagen molecules. This results in a less stable collagen matrix that holds the skin. Therefore, we can see how our skin becomes laxed and starts sagging under the force of gravity.

As we get older, our collagen production levels naturally decline by 1% annually, starting at the age of 25.

What is microneedling ?

Microneedling, aka collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment with the use of derma-pen or skin-pen. This device has a cartridge with the thin metal needles, which can vary in numbers. The main purpose of this device is to penetrate the skin to a certain depth in order to create multiple tiny holes. These holes send a signal to the body that the skin’s integrity is broken. Our body “reads” these signals as SOS and activates the immune system to quickly repair the skin.

image of Dermis Stamp Electric Pen

This essential mechanism of the body’s response is unique; it effectively protects the body’s organs and systems from the external environmental hazards. The disturbed skin fibroblasts start producing an increased amount of collagen to close these holes. That is how microneedling “stimulates” collagen production. It is interesting, that with each consecutive procedure the repairing capacity of the skin increases. This may be due to our immune system’s memory about the specific damaging mechanism.

When can i start microneedling ?

The good news is microneedling not only stimulates the production of collagen, it also accelerates the skin cells reproduction.

It is important to remember, as we age, our hormones’ levels decline. Specifically, estrogen is responsible for skin’s youthful appearance.

With less estrogen, the skin cells’ renewal declines. We literally, start “wearing” our skin cells longer when we get older. Therefore, the skin in older people appears less bright; it gets drier and appears dull. The good news is microneedling not only stimulates the production of collagen; it also accelerates the skin cells reproduction. The skin dermis starts producing more fibroblasts and growing new micro-vessels. As a result, the skin rejuvenates! It may be wise to start microneedling, as an anti-aging intervention, after the age of 30 when the first fine lines start appearing. As estrogen production continues to decline, regular microneedling treatments may fight the skin aging process more effectively. At the ages of 40 and, particularly, 50, our skin will benefit from a greater number of treatments: by the time when the estrogen production drops to minimal level, the skin quality will appear much better. Women who are prescribed with hormone replacement can extend their skin’s repairing capacity much longer.

What areas can be treated with microneedling

Microneedling can be applied to the entire face, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, knees, abdomen, back, and other parts that develop wrinkles, scars, stretch marks. Microneedling can also be used for lips.

Are there restrictions for microneedling ?

Microneedling has relative and absolute contraindications. The relative contraindications include:

  • Keloids
  • History of eczema and psoriasis
  • History of actinic keratosis
  • History of herpes simplex infections
  • Complicated diabetes
  • Presence of raised molds and warts.
  • The absolute contraindications include:
  • Scleroderma
  • Active bacterial or fungal infection
  • Rosacea
  • Immunosuppression
  • Scars less than six months

How does micro-needling procedure look like ?

At Valeriya Life, for face microneedling, first, we perform a face skin texture assessment with the use of VISIA, an advanced skin analysis system. Then, we apply a numbing cream for 15-20 minutes. After a thorough cleansing of the skin with anti-septic solution, we perform a treatment that can last from 15 to 30 minutes. For each customer, we use only a sterile cartridge.

Is microneedling painful ?

We apply a numbing cream to make the procedure comfortable for our clients.

Microneedling diagram

During the procedure, we can apply hyaluronic acid serum, stem cell serum, and peptides to deliver active ingredients deep to the skin. In younger people with fine lines, the needle’s penetration level does not exceed 0.30 mm. If a person has post-acne scars, then our staff increase the length of the needle to 2.50 mm depending on the severity of post-acne holes and areas of depression. For people with deep wrinkles, our staff also uses longer needles to reach out the dermis level where the fibroblasts live. Having a professional tattoo artist on our staff, we also use microneedling as a preparation treatment for the skin micropigmentation. Preliminary microneedling helps to exfoliate and smooth the skin out. This helps the pigments be distributed in the skin more evenly and stay longer giving the face a glowing look.

what is the downtime of microneedling?

After the treatment, the skin appears slightly red. In naïve clients, the redness may stay longer than in the clients who had more than one treatment. Next day, the skin may be slightly swollen. After approximately seven days, the skin can flake. Noticeable results in the skin’s texture appear within a couple of weeks. Individuals with oily skin have a much shorter downtime.

How long do the results last?

You can see the results right after the first treatment. Microneedling has a cumulative effect; therefore, the results are much better when you have a series of treatment. The repeated treatments can be performed every three to four weeks.

Effects of microneedling

Microneedling reverses the skin damage and signs of aging. After this treatment, the skin evens out, gets tighter, and even gain some volume. Pores look smaller. Scars diminish and stretch marks get less noticeable.

What is the average cost of microneedling?

$539

Microneedling aftercare

  • Since, microneedling creates tiny holes in the skin, it is important to prevent infection and enable a quick healing. For this, it is important to properly wash the hands.
  • To minimize swelling, keep your head elevated. It is not uncommon for clients to experience under-eye swelling for the first 1 to 2 days, but this swelling will subside.
  • Activities: You may return to regular activities immediately. It is advised that you avoid hot baths, saunas, Jacuzzis, and pools for the first two days following treatment, as the bacteria common to these sites can affect the skin post-resurfacing and cause an infection.
  • Long-Term Skin Care: In addition to avoiding direct sun exposure, we suggest all clients use long term skin care that will optimize the youthful, rejuvenated appearance you have achieved.
  • Make-Up: After 24 hours, most microneedling clients are ready for makeup to hide the pinkness of the skin. If applied, it is important that you remove all makeup from the skin at night. Do not sleep with make up on the treated area.

Collagen induction therapy before and after image

  • Avoiding the Sun: Avoiding direct sun should become a permanent component of your long-term skin care program. Always use an SPF 30 or greater beginning 24 - 48 hours after the skin has fully healed. Sun exposure, tanning beds, and artificial sunless tanning lotions are not allowed in the treated areas during the course of the treatment and healing.
  • We offer clients a program for long-term facial skin maintenance This program offers skin maintaining and rejuvenating creams that are only available and administered by our medical team. The physician on our medical advisory team recommends the use of the Venus SkinTM Stem Cell Therapy Serum for at-home care treatment post 24 - 72 hours. Note that these assisting agents should always be used according to their accompanying instructions.

How Does Leaky Gut Link To Premature Aging?

Today, I would like to focus on one healthy thing that makes our life better: a healthy gut. From my medical practice and public health training, I strongly believe that a healthy gut is a significant immunologic protector from many diseases. The Leaky Gut Link To Premature Aging is also important to understand because gut health and chronic inflammation can affect how the body looks and feels over time. Moreover, a healthy gut and the aesthetics of our appearance are strongly connected. Fortunately, advanced technologies in medicine and nutrition allow us to improve and maintain the health of our gut. As a result, you can enjoy a high-quality life for longer.

As our lifespan started increasing, our disease span has also been increasing with it. Dr. Linne Linder stated that “our chronological age is the number”. However, she described biological age as “the cellular state of our bodies that can be older or younger than the chronological number”.

Numerous research studies showed that the main cause of our accelerated biological aging is the low-grade, chronic inflammation. Recently, I published an article about the role of overweight and pro-inflammatory food in chronic inflammation. This type of inflammation accelerates biological aging, leading to premature aging. The question is do you want to live your life in a good shape?.

Healthy Gut and Weight Can Decrease Premature Aging

The main causes of chronic inflammation are pro-inflammatory proteins that are produced as a response to various assaults. In turn, these proteins trigger more than 400 negative gene expressions in the body that slowly kill our cells and DNA material. My personal choice is to work toward my health and healthy weight to minimize a potential for eking out premature aging and chronic diseases.

Recently, I took a telomere test that revealed my biological age: it showed a considerably younger biological age than my chronological age. The results showed my cells perform as in a 22-year female. I appreciated this fact and can certainly say that my conscientious care for the gut and healthy weight have paid off.

Premature Aging leaky gut

What Is a Leaky Gut?

Our eating habits and environmental assaults can damage the gut wall integrity. Normally, the gut wall prevents the absorption and penetration of microorganisms, parasites, and undigested food particles to our body. This barrier is critical for our immune system. However, gluten, infections, toxins, stress and age break apart the intestinal lining and prompt a cascade of immunological responses and inflammatory reactions.

Once these “invaders” penetrate the gut wall, they attack our body from the inside, leading to the chronic inflammation. “From an MD’s standpoint, it’s a very gray area,” says gastroenterologist Donald Kirby, MD, director of Center for Human Nutrition at the Cleveland Clinic. “Physicians don’t know enough about the gut, which is our biggest immune system organ”. Yet, people who stick to a whole foods diet, fasting, and regular detoxification feel, perform and look much younger than people who are not.

Leaky gut, Premature Aging

How To Improve Gut Health?

One effective approach to make the gut healthy is a so-called elimination diet. This diet helps to remove the toxins and inflammatory foods for a certain period of time. It is important to remove inflammatory and toxic foods and prevent intestinal infections. Add digestive enzymes that improve digestion, beneficial bacteria to maintain a healthy balance of good bacteria, and, finally, periodically repair the gut wall. Here is my favorite “helper” – InflammaCore, which became an integral part of my healthy eating. Learn more here

Summary

Leaky gut significantly affects our immune system, leading to the chronic inflammation. In turn, chronic inflammation is a proven cause of premature aging and numerous chronic diseases. Although, aging is a natural process, it is highly beneficial to minimize the effects of chronic inflammation by improving our gut health with a better eating habits. Your biological clock can be reverted! If you choose to enjoy your active life for longer years, start considering your gut health as a priority!

Doing the Things Right or Doing the Right Things: Body Health vs. Body Positivism?

Doing the Things Right or Doing the Right Things: Body Health vs. Body Positivism?

Body Health vs. Body Positivism?

Body Positivism is a trending movement that many people know about today. The chief goal of the body positive movement is to challenge unrealistic beauty ideals. It also promotes self-acceptance for body sizes considered “outside of beauty norms.” Many corporations have started capitalizing on this movement by offering and promoting products for this population.

Although, I appreciate the movement, I also know that excess weight leads to bad diseases, including cancer, and premature aging. A few years ago, I reached my maximum body weight when my BMI hit 35, as a result of a hectic life and aging. My sizable overweight made me feel unhealthy and unhappy! That time, I did not even think about accepting myself in this state. I knew for sure it was a path to a gradual decline of the quality of my life.

I did not care about “positivism” of my body image; I did not struggle with self-confidence but my health. I certainly tried to manage my weight myself but did not succeed much as aging made it harder to achieve and maintain healthy weight. Finally, I decided to employ a professional fitness instructor and practice a whole foods diet. Today, I enjoy and work hard on a daily basis toward my healthy weight. I would like to introduce my fitness instructor Jay Petersen, who helps me exercise correctly and effectively manage my weight.

Jay holds M.S., ACSM-CPT, Pn1 and works as Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach, and Metabolic Technician at LifeTime, Omaha, NE, USA. I asked Jay to share his expertise about weight management. Jay graciously gave me his interview.

Q: What are some common misconceptions individuals have when first starting a weight loss program?

A: “Most individuals who start on their weight loss journey feel they need to make extreme changes in their diet and exercise. Often, they will follow whatever fad diet is currently popular, which may cut out certain food groups, is an extremely small amount of calories, and is unhealthy and unsustainable in the long-term. As a nutrition coach, the focus of my coaching is to put together a balanced diet that is healthy for the long-term and is sustainable for the client’s lifestyle, dietary preferences, and needs.

When it comes to exercise, clients often feel they need to exercise very frequently and look to follow the newest high intensity workout that will burn the most calories or make them feel as tired as possible. Usually, individuals will only focus on a certain type of exercise and will only do cardio or only use weights for their workouts instead of utilizing a balance of the two.

As a trainer, my goal is to put together a balanced workout regimen that utilizes the appropriate amount of cardio and weights that will not only burn a much fat as possible but will also build muscle and strength while using the appropriate intensities for the individual.

Overall, clients often expect immediate results from their weight loss efforts that will somehow last forever. A 6 or 8 week crash diet and workout routine are often marketed to them to make them believe that it is all they need to make them look and be as fit as their favorite celebrity, when in reality it take slow and steady progress over time to make big changes in one’s body composition and fitness that are sustainable and long lasting.

As a fitness professional, my focus is to incrementally instill small habit changes in a client’s daily lifestyle over time. These small changes lead to big lifestyle changes that make healthy eating and exercise part of their life, which will help them keep the weight off in the long run and improve their quality of life.”

Q: What are individuals looking for when coming to you for help and what questions do they have?

A: “The majority of individuals who approach me for help are lost and are looking for a program that will give them everything they need to have success. Many questions pop up such as “what should I eat and how much?”, or “What kind of exercises should I be doing and how much?”, as well as “what is the proper way to do a certain exercise without it hurting me?”. Thankfully here at Lifetime, we have the ability to answer these questions utilizing our various metabolic assessments.

When getting a client started with a weight loss program, I begin by assessing the individual’s goals, needs, exercise experience, and movement quality. Then I begin by performing metabolic assessments to determine what intensities the individual should be exercising at to achieve the maximal fat loss and fitness gains as well as measure their resting metabolism to determine how much food and what kinds of food the individual should be consuming. Once all of this information is gathered, I put together a balanced and individualized program for the client so they can achieve significant and long-lasting results.”

In conclusion, I can say that doing the things right is not the same as doing the right things. Maybe “body positivism” is the right thing to do for self-acceptance and self-confidence, but “healthy body” certainly requires doing the things right. Referring to a specialist for successful management of body weight is the right thing to do. Qualified experienced specialists know how to do the things right. I wish this simple wisdom and Jay’s expertise help those people who commit to their health.

PERCENTILE SCORES

VISIA’s patented comparison to norms analysis uses the world’s largest skin feature database to grade your patient’s skin relative to others of the same age and skin type. Measure spots, wrinkles, texture, pores, UV spots, brown spots, red areas, and porphyrins.

MEANINGFUL COMPARISONS

Compare results side by side for any combination of views, features or time points, including graphs and numerical data. Zoom and pan images in tandem for clear and easy comparisons.

As well as a comprehensive quantitative analysis on eight common skin features that clients are able to review at home:

The above skin analysis features the following:

  • Spots: Spots are typically brown or red skin lesions including freckles, acne scars, hyper-pigmentation and vascular lesions. Spots are distinguishable by their distinct color and contrast from the background skin tone. Spots vary in size and generally have a circular shape.
  • Pores: Pores are the circular surface openings of sweat gland ducts. Due to shadowing, pores appear darker than the surrounding skin tone and are identified by their darker color and circular shape. The VISIA system distinguishes pores from spots based on size; by definition, the area of a pore is much smaller than a spot.
  • Wrinkles: Wrinkles are furrows, folds or creases in the skin, which increase in occurrence as a result of sun exposure, and are associated with decreasing skin elasticity. This skin feature has the greatest variability from image to image as it is highly dependent upon the facial expression of the client. Wrinkles are identified by their characteristic long, narrow shape.
  • Texture: Texture is primarily an analysis of skin smoothness. Texture measures skin color and smoothness by identifying gradations in color from the surrounding skin tone, as well as peaks (shown in yellow) and valleys (shown in blue) on the skin surface that indicate variations in the surface texture.Texture is primarily an analysis of skin smoothness. • Porphyrins: Porphyrins are bacterial excretions that can become lodged in pores and lead to acne. Porphyrins fluoresce in UV light and exhibit circular white spot characteristics.
  • UV Spots: UV spots occur when melanin coagulates below the skin surface as a result of sun damage. UV spots are generally invisible under normal lighting conditions. The selective absorption of the UV light by the epidermal melanin enhances its display and detection by VISIA.
  • Red Areas: Red Areas represent a potential variety of conditions, such as acne, inflammation, Rosacea or spider veins. Blood vessels and hemoglobin contained in the papillary dermis, a sub-layer of skin, give these structures their red color, which is detected by the RBX Technology in VISIA. Acne spots and inflammation vary in size but are generally round in shape. Rosacea is usually larger and diffuse compared to acne, and spider veins usually are short, thin and can be interconnected in a dense network.
  • Brown spots: Brown Spots are lesions on the skin such as hyper-pigmentation, freckles, lentigines, and melasma. Brown Spots occur from an excess of Melanin. Melanin is produced by melanocytes in the bottom layer of the epidermis. Brown Spots produce an uneven appearance to the skin, and are detected in VISIA by RBX.

Top Clients Questions About Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photorejuvenation Treatments

Top Clients Questions About Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photorejuvenation Treatments

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reported that Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photorejuvenation treatments are the second top non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedures performed in the United States.

What is IPL photorejuvenation?

IPL is a medical aesthetic option for treating sun-induced changes on the face, including brown pigmentation, age spots, dermal atrophy associated with photoaging, broken blood vessels, as well as actinic keratoses, and nonmelanoma skin cancers. IPL may be used for these changes on the face, hands, neck and chest as well. It is safe, non-invasive and is tailored to the individual patient’s skin. IPL devices use multiple wavelengths of light.

Is IPL for any skin tone?

Skin tone is always a consideration for IPL-based photorejuvenation treatments. People with light to medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-IV) typically have the best results. In contrast, individuals with darker or tanned skin have a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation due to higher melanin concentrations in the skin. Valeriya Life’s staff always performs a small test patch in a discreet area before performing the first complete treatment to see how the client’s skin reacts.

Is IPL painful?

Our client comfort is a priority, and we always rely on communication during each treatment session. During the treatment, you can feel some stinging, similar in sensation to the snapping of a small rubber band against the skin. We also have our patients apply a numbing cream to the area at home or in the office 20-30 minutes prior to the treatment to make the treatment comfortable.

How is IPL performed?

First, we perform a skin complexion assessment with the use of advanced technology VISIA to obtain a highly refined visualization of sub-surface melanin and vascular conditions, to quantitatively analyze the extent of pigmented and vascular lesions, and to develop an individualized plan for maximum impact. Then, we clean the treatment area and apply a cool ultrasonic. We use dark glasses on both clients and staff to protect the eyes from the light. With the patient in a comfortable chair, the IPL applicator is gently applied to the skin and light pulses are applied. Individual treatment sessions are short, with a typical session averaging 15 to 20 minutes or longer, depending on which area is being treated.

Is There a Downtime after IPL Treatment?

IPL “burns” pigments, for examples, in melanosomes, the cells that produce melanin and pigmented keratinocytes, resulting in their elimination as the microcrusts from the skin surface. Therefore, some brown spots may appear darker immediately after treatment and stay for a few days. With no downtime required post-treatment, you can return to your regular activities afterward, making it possible to schedule your sessions into lunch breaks, on your way home from work, or whenever is most convenient for you. You can also apply makeup immediately after IPL treatment if necessary.

How many treatments will I need?

The total number of treatments needed to reach a patient’s aesthetic goals vary by individual. In general, patients have a series of three to six treatments, approximately three weeks apart. Clients may require a touch-up session every three to six months following the completion of their initial treatment plan.

What is my skincare before and after IPL treatment?

It is important to protect your skin from the sun using a sunscreen daily. You should use a sensitive skin cleanser and moisturizer for about a week, then you can resume your normal skin care routine. To protect the healthy skin from a possible damage, we apply Venus Stem Cell Therapy Serum (SCT). SCT significantly decreases post-treatment inflammation.
